(October 1, 2020) Summit County, Utah — To support ongoing COVID-19 pandemic response and recovery efforts, Summit County is working with local municipalities, businesses, nonprofits and individuals to spend $5,938,786 in federal relief funding. Provided through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, these funds will go toward unbudgeted expenses incurred due to COVID-19 and assistance programs to small businesses, individuals and families whose incomes have been impacted by public health orders.
“It is vital that we provide relief funding to those in our community most affected by this emergency,” County Council Chair Doug Clyde said. “Our goal is to circulate this money in our community and local economy as quickly and widely as possible. This federal relief money will help our county and municipal governments recover from the large expenses incurred as a result of the pandemic response.”
Distributed in three allocations in June, July and October, all CARES Act funds must be spent by November 30, 2020. Funding amounts to cities and counties were determined by the State of Utah according to a population distribution formula. Planned or executed expenditures include:
- $860,000 to support the County Health Department with various response and mitigation efforts, such as expanded COVID-19 testing; contact tracing and case investigations; business compliance with health orders; and preparations for mass vaccinations (equipment, signage, storage, facilities, refrigeration)
- $293,500 to Park City, North Summit and South Summit school districts for personal protective equipment, plexiglass and other items to keep students and teachers safe at school
- $500,000 on IT infrastructure and equipment upgrades to facilitate telecommuting
- $180,000 on personal protective equipment for local businesses, vulnerable populations and residents
- $100,000 to support participants of the Summit County Jr. Livestock Show & Sale
- $1,000,000 in grants to local small businesses and nonprofits for mortgage/rental assistance and operations impacted by COVID-19
- $1,000,000 grant program to assist individuals and families whose incomes have been impacted by COVID-19

About the CARES Act:
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump on March 27, 2020. Congress developed the Act to support state and local governments in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the largest economic relief bill in U.S. history and will allocate $2.2 trillion in support to individuals and businesses affected by the pandemic and economic downturn. This legislation provided $1.25 billion to the State of Utah.
