Curious about obtaining an open burn permit?

Unincorporated Areas

  • Require a permit on approved burning days from June 1 through October 31. Burn permits are regulated through the State Forester and can be obtained by contacting the County Fire Warden at (435) 640-2075. The Fire Warden is available for permits Monday - Thursday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Please plan ahead to ensure permits are issued well before your planned burn. Burn permits for weekend burns should be requested by the preceding Wednesday.

  • No permit required after November 1 and until April 1, but you need to meet the 500-clearing index and contact the Summit County Sheriff’s non-emergency Dispatch (435-336-3600) prior to burning and when you're done. Questions? Contact the County Fire Warden at (435) 640-2075.

Incorporated Areas

  • Limited to two seasonal windows and on approved burning days. The first window is from March 31 through May 30. The second window is from September 15 through October 30. Burn permits are obtained through the State's Division of Air Quality (DAQ). Permit applications can be completed at the DAQ site.
  • For 2023 only: The South Summit Fire District has applied and received an extension on their open burn permitting. Incorporated areas of Francis Kamas and Oakley can get permits until December 31 following the same steps as above.
